Air Mattress or Folding Mattress: Which Works as a Guest Bed?
Two types of guest bed with different strengths: a factual comparison without a ranking.
Short answer: which one when?
An air mattress comes into question if you rarely have visitors and want the bed stored as small as possible and sitting higher. A folding mattress suits better if you want a bed without a pump that simply unfolds and is made of foam.
There is no general favourite. It depends on your use: how often, where, how long, with how much storage space and for whom. The following sections go through point by point what separates the two, with the dimensions of our models.
Both types are generally used as a guest bed, not as a permanent replacement for a regular mattress on a slatted frame. For everyday use, guidance can be found in the mattress size guide.
Set-up and handling
The folding mattress consists of three parts and is simply unfolded. It needs neither a pump nor electricity. If it was delivered vacuum-packed, the foam unfolds fully within 24 to 48 hours; after that it is ready for use at any time.
The 3-in-1 Premium Air Mattress is delivered rolled and vacuum-packed. A pump is included, as are the instructions for use.
In practical terms, this means:
- Folding mattress: set-up without accessories, but a fixed storage place for the folded package.
- Air mattress: set-up with a pump; have the pump ready before the visit.
- Both: let new material air briefly before the visitors arrive. Notes on this in the guide New mattress: off-gassing and airing.
Height and feel
Height clearly separates the two. Our folding mattress is 15 cm high and made of memory foam. The 3-in-1 air mattress measures 40 cm in height and has a 47 cm backrest, and its top surface is made of flocked fibres.
| Folding mattress | 3-in-1 air mattress | |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions (L × W × H) | 195 × 75 × 15 cm | 203 × 152 × 40 cm |
| Core | Memory foam | Air, PVC shell |
| Special feature | 3-part, foldable | with backrest (47 cm) |
A higher sleeping surface can make getting up easier for some, but can feel more mobile on air mattresses. Foam gives way depending on weight and pressure, moulds around the body and sits closer to the floor. Which feel you prefer is a matter of taste. If possible, try both at friends' homes.
Storage and transport
Folded, the folding mattress measures 75 × 65 × 45 cm. That is compact, but there should be a corner of its own in a cupboard or a spot under the bed.
Once deflated, the air mattress can generally be stored smaller and more flexibly; it comes with a carry bag. We do not state exact packed dimensions for it. If space is tight, measure your storage space and ask customer service if in doubt.
Care, durability and repair
The folding mattress has a removable cover with a zip. When cleaning, follow the care label; you do not wash the foam core.
The air mattress is not immersed in water; you wipe it clean. A repair patch is included. In general for air mattresses: a small leak can cause the air to go down overnight. So check the bed before the visit by inflating it once and leaving it for a few hours.
Both types last longer if you store them dry and protect edges and valve from damage. We make no specific statements about durability.
Decision aid by place of use
A few guiding questions help with the choice:
- How often is the bed used? Occasionally: both suitable. More often: rather foam or a regular mattress.
- How much space do you have for storage? Little space: consider the air mattress. Room for a flat package: folding mattress.
- Do you want a bed without a pump and without electricity? Then the folding mattress.
- Should the bed sit higher and have a backrest? Then the air mattress.
- Where will the bed stand? On a cold or damp floor, consider the floor temperature, whichever type you choose.
Our assessment: if you want a guest bed without a pump and without electricity, the folding mattress tends to suit you better; if you want a higher sleeping surface with a backrest and can let the air out after use, you should look at the air mattress.
Frequently asked questions
Is an air mattress or a folding mattress more comfortable?
That is a matter of taste. A foam folding mattress gives way under pressure and sits lower. An air mattress sits higher and can feel springier. Both are mostly used for occasional guests. Think about what your guests are used to and how much space you have.
Do I have to inflate an air mattress?
An air mattress is filled with air before use. For the 3-in-1 Premium Air Mattress, a pump is included; how inflating works in detail is in the instructions for use supplied. A folding mattress, by contrast, only needs unfolding; it needs no pump and no electricity.
How much space does a folding mattress need for storage?
Our folding mattress measures 75 × 65 × 45 cm folded. Plan a fixed place for it, such as in a cupboard, and measure the storage space beforehand, because depending on the cupboard a package of this size takes up a lot of room. Unfolded it measures 195 × 75 cm and is 15 cm high.
How do I clean an air mattress?
You should not immerse the 3-in-1 air mattress in water but wipe it clean. Then let it dry completely before folding it, and store it dry. For the folding mattress: treat the cover according to the care label, do not wash the foam core.
How do I store a guest bed so it stays usable for a long time?
Store both types dry and not next to a radiator or in damp rooms. With the air mattress, the air should be let out completely and the mattress should be dry before you fold it. Fold the folding mattress after airing. We make no specific statements about durability.
