What the firmness levels mean, why they are not standardized – and which topper suits which feel.

What the firmness level means for a topper
The firmness level describes how firm the sleeping surface feels. A scale from H1 (very soft) to H5 (very firm) is common; H3 is considered medium-soft to medium-firm. Important to know: firmness levels are not standardized. Each manufacturer sets them independently, so an H3 from one brand can feel different from an H3 from another.
With a topper, there is also the fact that it lies on top of the mattress: how it feels results from both together. An H3 topper on a very hard mattress feels different from the same topper on a soft one. That is why, in the Topper-Finder, we first ask how your mattress feels – not for a firmness level.

Body weight plays a role, but it is not the only factor: heavier people sink in deeper and feel the same topper as softer, lighter people as firmer. Sleep position and personal preference count at least as much.
Memory foam: soft as you sink in, supportive underneath
The Premium Komfort Topper and the 2-in-1 Komfort Topper have a core of gel memory foam, while the Dream Topper has a foam with a memory-foam effect. Memory foam reacts to heat and pressure: it gives way where the body rests on it and stays supportive everywhere else. This makes the feel “gently cushioning”, even with the firmer H4.
The gel foam in the Premium Komfort Topper and the 2-in-1 Komfort Topper is designed for a cooler feel; together with the breathable cover (bamboo viscose or Tencel™), this provides a pleasant sleep climate.

Frequently asked questions about firmness levels
Is H3 soft or firm?
H3 sits in the middle of the usual H1 to H5 scale – medium-soft to medium-firm. Thanks to its 7 cm of gel memory foam, our Premium Komfort Topper with H3 feels soft and cushioning without you “sinking through”.
Can a topper make a mattress that is too soft firmer?
Up to a point: the H4 side of the 2-in-1 Komfort Topper gives noticeably more support on a sleeping surface that is too soft. But if the mattress is worn out and has a dip, no topper can compensate for that.
Which firmness level for two people with different preferences?
With two mattresses side by side, you can choose two different toppers in 80 or 90 × 200 cm – or a single continuous 2-in-1 Komfort Topper whose sides you try out together. An individual topper always has only one firmness level per side.
Can I test the firmness level at home?
Yes – the 100-night sleep trial applies to all toppers. With the 2-in-1 Komfort Topper, you can try both firmness levels with a single topper by turning it over.
Does a topper replace medical advice for discomfort?
No. Our toppers are comfort products, not medical devices. If discomfort persists, please consult a doctor or medical professional – more on this in the note on health-related information.
How does the sleep trial work?
You can try all three toppers at home for 100 nights. If the topper is not right for you, register the return in the returns center – the customer bears the cost of the return. The trial period begins on the day of delivery.
Can I wash the cover?
Yes. On all three toppers, the cover is removable and washable – please follow the care label. The foam core itself must not be washed; it should be aired out instead.
Does a new topper smell?
A slight, material-related smell is normal for foams and fades noticeably within a few days after unpacking and airing it out. The foams are CertiPUR-US®-certified, the covers tested to OEKO-TEX® – details can be found on the respective product page.
