How to Wash and Care for a Mattress Topper

The foam core is not washed, the removable cover is, according to the care label.

Short answer: wash the cover, air the core

You do not wash the foam core of a topper in the machine, but you can usually wash the removable cover, following the care label. A foam core would soak up water, dry badly and could be damaged in the process. The KomfortKissen warranty terms also state that for mattresses and toppers only the covers can be washed.

The key rules at a glance:

  • Remove the cover from the core and wash it according to the label.
  • Air the foam core regularly, do not soak it.
  • Let the cover and core dry completely before putting them back together.
  • No bleach, no ironing, no dry cleaning, unless the label says otherwise.

This page gives general guidance. The care label on your product is always what counts.

Removing and washing the cover

All three toppers have a removable cover. Pull the cover off the core (on the Premium Comfort Topper via the zip) and check the care label. It states programme, drying method and prohibitions (for example bleaching).

What is stated for each model:

ModelCoverWashingDrying
Premium Comfort TopperBamboo viscosemachine washable, gentle cycle with mild detergent, temperature per care labelair dry
2-in-1 Comfort TopperKnitted fabric (30% Tencel™, 68% polyester, 2% elastane)machine washable per care labelair dry
Dream TopperKnitted fabric (30% Tencel™, 68% polyester, 2% elastane)40 °C in the washing machinegentle tumble dry or air dry; do not bleach, do not iron

For the first two models we do not state a temperature, because it depends on the label, so please check there. In general: close any zip before washing, usually use a mild detergent, avoid fabric softener and do not overfill the drum with the cover.

Caring for the foam core

The core stays dry. Instead of washing, airing and the occasional vacuuming help:

  1. Lay the core without its cover in a dry, well-ventilated place, preferably not in direct sunshine.
  2. If needed, vacuum the surface carefully and without pressure using the upholstery nozzle.
  3. Turn or rotate the topper as far as it allows. The 2-in-1 Comfort Topper is reversible; for the Premium Comfort Topper, turning and rotating follow the product description.

For slight odours, dry baking soda is often recommended: sprinkle it thinly, leave it for a few hours and then vacuum thoroughly. This is a common household remedy with no guarantee of effect; if in doubt, try it first on an inconspicuous spot.

A new topper may smell of new goods at first. This usually fades with airing. Important: the foam should be fully unfolded before you judge it, which takes 24 to 48 hours.

Removing stains

On the cover, stains are usually the smaller problem; if liquid gets into the foam, however, quick action is needed. The following steps are general household tips, and the care label takes priority.

  • Dab liquid up straight away with an absorbent cloth, do not rub.
  • Put a little lukewarm water and some mild washing-up liquid on a cloth and dab the spot carefully.
  • Then wipe over with a slightly damp cloth and leave the spot to dry completely in the open air.
  • Never soak the core. Moisture in the foam dries very slowly.

Stains on the cover can often be removed in the normal wash cycle; this cannot be guaranteed. You can pre-treat stubborn spots with a little gall soap, unless the label says otherwise. Bleach is not intended for our covers.

Does the cover fit in the machine?

Topper covers for 160 × 200 cm or larger are big. They need a drum with enough volume, otherwise the cover will not rinse well. If your machine is not big enough, you have these options:

  • Launderette: machines with a larger capacity are available there.
  • Laundry or dry cleaner: ask beforehand whether they accept covers of this size, and show the care label.
  • Partial cleaning: for light soiling, wiping the spot is sometimes enough.

For drying: hang the cover loosely or lay it flat, and turn it over in between. A cover with residual moisture on the core can lead to a musty smell. Only the Dream Topper mentions gentle tumble drying; for the other two models, air drying is the safe side.

Protectors and fitted sheets as protection

If you want to keep cleaning effort low, you can put a mattress protector or a fitted sheet between your body and the topper. Both are usually easier to wash than a large topper cover.

  • Mattress protector with elastic corner straps: terry (80% cotton, 20% polyester); care by machine wash per care label, dry gently, do not bleach, do not iron.
  • Waterproof mattress protector made of cotton: top side of 100% cotton, underside with TPU film; machine wash per care label, dry at low temperature, do not bleach, do not iron, do not dry clean.

How protector, mattress pad and topper differ is explained in the guide Mattress protector, mattress pad and topper.

A common habit is to air the bed briefly after getting up, before covering it again. A fixed washing rhythm is a matter of taste; depending on use, intervals of a few weeks to months or a wash when needed are usual.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash a topper in the washing machine?

Not the foam core, but usually the removable cover. Remove the cover and wash it according to the care label. The foam would soak up water and dry only slowly. Our warranty terms also provide that for mattresses and toppers only the covers are washed.

How do I wash the cover of a memory foam topper?

Gently and per the label. For the Dream Topper, 40 °C and gentle drying are stated. For the Premium Comfort Topper, a gentle cycle with mild detergent applies, and the care label gives the temperature. For the 2-in-1 Comfort Topper the label also applies; air dry.

Can the topper cover go in the tumble dryer?

Only for the Dream Topper do we explicitly state gentle tumble drying. For the Premium Comfort Topper and the 2-in-1 Comfort Topper we recommend air drying. If in doubt, the care label takes priority. The cover should be completely dry before it is put back on.

How do I clean a topper with household remedies?

The core stays dry. Airing, careful vacuuming and, if needed, dry baking soda sprinkled thinly and vacuumed off again are usual (no guarantee of effect). Dab stains with a slightly damp cloth and mild washing-up liquid. Wet cleaning, steam and bleach are generally not intended for foam cores.

How often should a topper be cleaned?

There is no fixed interval. It is usual to air the topper regularly and to wash the cover after a few weeks to months depending on use, or when needed. With a protector or fitted sheet underneath, care can often be simplified. What matters is that everything is completely dry before putting it back together.
